Practical note: The park is only accessible by boat — no land access inside. In high season (December–April, Easter), tours must be booked 24h in advance. Caño Hondo has a separate entrance fee (~300 DOP / ~5 USD) on top of the Los Haitises tour. The Sabana de la Mar dock is 35 min from Vista Serena (Miches) — the park + ecolodge combo is the best logistical base in the region.
February 2026 — excursion from Sabana de la Mar, 7 AM:
Leaving the Sabana de la Mar dock in the mist, the first mogotes emerged from the water after ten minutes of mangrove navigation. At Cueva de San Gabriel, the Taíno petroglyphs are within arm's reach — there's something deeply human about that contact with 750 years of history. Vista Serena is 35 minutes from this place. When the Four Seasons Tropicalia opens in 2027 just 20 minutes away, this nature itinerary will completely shift in scale.

Los Haitises National Park is one of the most extraordinary ecosystems in the Caribbean — and one of the least known outside the Dominican Republic. With over 1,600 km² of rainforest, virgin mangroves, and karst formations rising directly from the water, it offers a natural experience without equal in the Western Atlantic.
Its name in the Taíno language means "highlands" — and the landscape confirms it: rounded hills, caves with ancestral petroglyphs, mangrove channels inhabited by manatees. From Sabana de la Mar (35 min from Vista Serena), access is by boat, which preserves its untouched character.

Taíno Caves: 750 Years of History Carved in Stone
The caves of Los Haitises are the most accessible archaeological site in the Dominican Republic. The Cueva de San Gabriel and the Cueva de la Línea preserve Taíno petroglyphs and pictographs over 750 years old — depictions of sacred figures, animals, and rituals attesting to a sophisticated civilization deeply connected to nature.
No reproductions, no museography: the carvings are directly on the rock, at eye level, in caves accessible only by boat. This is one of the rare places in the Caribbean where you can literally touch pre-Columbian history.

Over 200 Bird Species and Exceptional Marine Wildlife
Los Haitises is a biodiversity refuge unmatched in the insular Caribbean. The park hosts over 200 bird species — including the endangered Ridgway's Hawk, and pelican colonies nesting in the mogote cliffs. The mangroves function as a natural nursery: in their channels, Caribbean manatees, bottlenose dolphins, and sea turtles are regularly observed.
For investors considering an ecotourism project near Miches, this ecosystem is an irreplaceable asset: 35 minutes from Vista Serena, with no hotel development in its immediate perimeter.

Kayak, Boat, and Hiking: Activities for Every Profile
Activities at Los Haitises adapt to every level: boat tour through the mangrove channels (the most accessible option), kayaking between the mogotes for the more active, hiking on the park's marked trails, and visiting Caño Hondo — an eco-hotel with natural freshwater pools 15 min from the dock, ideal to round out the day.
From January to March, the excursion combines with humpback whale watching in Samaná Bay — the greatest natural spectacle in the Caribbean — for a full day from Vista Serena. Also discover the rest of the Miches region →
"When I bring investors to Vista Serena, the next morning we head to Los Haitises. Inside the Cueva de San Gabriel, watching the petroglyphs from the boat, they understand something no PDF can convey: this level of nature, 35 minutes from their future land, doesn't exist anywhere else in the Caribbean accessible from an international airport. The park won't change — the pricing window will."
